| Bertelsmann Takes Full Ownership of Random House Mondadori A week after announcing that it was forming a joint venture with Pearson to create Penguin Random House, Bertelsmann said this morning that it has agreed to acquire the 50% stake in the Spanish-language publisher Random House Mondadori that had been held by its Italian partner. The purchase is expected to be completed before the end of the year. more » Harlequin parent company Torstar reported last week that the sales at the publisher fell 6.8%, to C$107.8 million, while operating earnings declined to C$18.8 million from C$23.8 million in the third quarter ended September 30. The drops included the negative impact or foreign exchange. Excluding foreign exchange, total revenue was down C$6.0 million with revenue in North America off C$4.2 million. Digital sales accounted for 20.3% of total revenue in the quarter compared to 15.8% in the third quarter of 2011. more » ADVERTISEMENT Modugno Joining Random House Maria Modugno has been named editorial director of picture books at Random House and Golden Books for Young Readers Group. Modugno, who is currently v-p and editorial director at HarperCollins Children's Books, will start at RH on November 26, reporting to v-p and publishing director Mallory Loehr. more » Harmony Books, an imprint at Random House's Crown Publishing Group, is being refocused. The imprint, which has focused on mind-body-spirit titles, will now publish titles in the additional categories of health, diet, relationships and self-improvement. With the expanded editorial focus, Heather Jackson has been hired as consulting editor-at-large, and Leah Miller has been named editor. The imprint is also getting a new logo. more »
Publisher Coordinates Grassroots Efforts on Staten Island Veteran book publicist Michele Karlsberg, who is publisher of Bywater Books, a feminist press, is putting her professional skills to good use this week: Karlsberg is coordinating a group of Staten Islanders who are working around-the-clock to rebuild their devastated community in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. more » » Some booksellers are having trouble with their Kobo Glo and Kobo Mini display units, which arrived late last week. Touch screens aren't working due to tight security clamps and units needed to be reset, which in the case of the Mini's means taking off the back to get to the reset, more » » Philadelphia's oldest bookstore, 76-year-old Robin's Book Store, will close at the end of the year. Even with cutbacks like closing its annex five years ago or more recently moving to the second floor, the store couldn't sustain itself. This month the liquidation is continuing in earnest with all books 80% off list (30% off marked) until Thanksgiving, when they go to 90% off.
